You know the questions. Answering them well is the hard part.

You can LeetCode your way through coding rounds. But most engineers wing behavioral interviews - and it costs them.

1

Your answer rambles for 8 minutes. You lose the interviewer's attention.

2

You know you led the project, but the way you tell your story doesn't reflect that.

3

You get the offer - but one level below where you should be.

4

You feel you do well but get one rejection after another.

This tool fixes all four.

How it works

Step 1

Choose your scenario

Select your target role, pick from a list of real interview questions, or bring your own.

Step 2

Have a real conversation

A voice-based AI interviewer follows up with probing questions, just like a real interviewer would.

End

Tell me about a time you had to make an unpopular decision with your team. What was the situation and how did you handle it?

Last year, I decided to pause all feature work for two sprints to pay down critical tech debt. The team was frustrated because we had just committed to a product roadmap with tight deadlines...

That sounds like a tough call. How did you communicate this decision to the team, and how did you get their buy-in?

I held a team meeting where I showed them our incident data - we'd had 3 production outages in 6 weeks, all caused by the same legacy service. I framed it as an investment: two sprints now would save us months of firefighting...

Strengths
  • Used concrete data (3 outages in 6 weeks) to justify the decision
  • Demonstrated clear stakeholder communication by presenting a comparison framework
Areas to Improve
  • Could quantify the impact more - what was the cost of each outage?
  • Consider mentioning how you measured success after the tech debt sprint
Detailed Coaching

Your answer demonstrates strong situational awareness by using incident data to frame the decision. To elevate further, quantify the business impact and tie the investment to measurable outcomes...

Model Answer

“We were averaging 3 P1 incidents per month. I gathered data, calculated 120h of engineering time lost, and presented a trade-off analysis to leadership...”

Your stories can land better than you think.

Most engineers undersell their experience - spending too long on context, skipping their most impressive actions, forgetting to quantify impact, and never mentioning what they learned. This tool catches all of it and shows you exactly how to fix it.

Every company evaluates behavioral interviews differently. Tailor your preparation to the company you are interviewing at.

Engineers who prepared

12 sessions

After 5 sessions my CARL scores went from 4s to consistent 8s. I walked into my final round knowing exactly how to frame every story. Landed the EM role and negotiated £15K above their initial offer because I genuinely did so well thanks to the prep with this tool.

3 stories restructured

My stories were pitching Senior, not Staff. After restructuring three key stories using the level assessment, I got the Staff offer I was actually interviewing for. Without this I would have not gotten a Staff level offer for sure.

The scoring showed me I was not articulating well my impact and showed me how to do it better. Three sessions later I was consistently scoring 7+ across all dimensions. Got a Senior EM offer with a £25K higher total comp than my previous role.

What is CARL?

Context, Action, Result, Learnings - the framework top interviewers use to evaluate behavioral answers. Every practice session scores you on how well your story hits each element, so you know exactly what to sharpen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from other interview prep tools?
Most AI interview tools are built for coding interviews - they don't understand behavioral dynamics. Generic chatbots ask questions but can't evaluate your answer the way a real interviewer would. This tool is built on frameworks used by interviewers at top tech companies. It scores you on the same dimensions they use: story structure, scope signal, leadership evidence, impact articulation, and more. It tells you if your story would get you the Staff offer or get you down-leveled to Senior. No other tool does this.
What questions are covered?
Every question type you'll face in a real interview - across Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Manager, Senior Engineer, and Staff/Principal Engineer roles. Categories cover every signal area interviewers assess: Leadership, Conflict Resolution, Technical Decision Making, Team Building, Stakeholder Management, Prioritization, Mentoring & Coaching, Delivery & Execution, Influence, Organizational Design, Hiring, and Performance Management. Plus you can bring your own questions.
What kind of feedback will I get?
Your answer is scored across 8 dimensions on a 1-10 scale: Story Structure (CARL method - Context, Action, Result, Learnings), Specificity (concrete examples vs vague claims), Leadership Signal (evidence of initiative and decision-making), Impact Articulation (quantified outcomes), Conciseness (focused vs rambling), Self-Awareness (honest reflection), Scope & Complexity (are your stories the right level for your target role?), and Learnings & Reflection (growth mindset evidence). You also get specific strengths with direct quotes, actionable improvements showing exactly how to rephrase, a model answer for comparison, and key moment analysis. When your story scope doesn't match your target level, you get a clear warning explaining why this would result in down-leveling. See a full example on the sample feedback page: em-tools.io/interview-prep/sample-feedback
What's included in the free trial?
You get one full practice session for free: choose a question, have a voice conversation with the AI interviewer (including probing follow-ups), and receive detailed coaching feedback scored across all 8 dimensions. You'll see your score, strengths, improvements, a model answer, and a level assessment. No credit card required, no signup needed. Experience the full product before deciding.
Is this only for Engineering Managers?
No. The tool covers four roles: Engineering Manager (first-line, managing a team of engineers), Senior Engineering Manager (managing managers or multiple teams), Senior Engineer (senior ICs preparing for behavioral rounds), and Staff/Principal Engineer (staff+ ICs with org-wide impact). Questions, follow-ups, and scoring are calibrated to the expectations of each role.
I don't think I have impressive enough stories. Is this tool still useful?
Your stories are almost certainly better than you think. After working with hundreds of engineers, the most consistent finding is that candidates undersell their experience. You have great stories - you just haven't been trained to tell them. The tool helps you discover the signal in your existing experience: the moments where you drove outcomes, influenced others, or navigated complexity. You don't need experience at a top tech company. You need to know how to talk about what you've done in a way that lands with interviewers.
Will this actually affect my offer level?
Behavioral interviews are the primary factor in leveling decisions for senior engineers and above. Interviewers at top tech companies look at the behavioral round first when deciding between levels. The difference between levels at top companies is £25K-£80K per year. Even a marginal improvement in your behavioral performance can have an outsized impact on your compensation. Down-leveling is the single most expensive outcome of poor behavioral interview performance.
